Flashback Fridays
Every Friday night - From 9pm Castle lounge
During the cold winter’s nights we’ve just been through, many of us have been reminded of the simple pleasures of
putting on a comfortable old pair of slippers. Slipping
easily into the familiar, recalling great times and
memorable moments – nothing could better embrace the
spirit of what is happening with Friday night entertainment
in the intimate setting of the Castle Lounge.
Audiences have enthusiastically embraced some of
Sydney’s favourite bands featuring some vastly
experienced players who share a passion to get party
goers jumping. It has created a great vibe for ‘Flashback
Fridays’, and we are promising to build on that in the
months ahead.
The word is out, and we are attracting some high profile
bands, cuing up for a chance to play here. Former Test
cricketer, TV presenter and life long muso Mike Whitney
and his band can’t wait to bump in for their first gig with
us on August 15th . I must admit curiosity is getting the
better of me too, and that is one act that will be
fascinating to check out.
We welcome back the amazing Bang Shang A Lang and
their celebrity Wiggles mate and resident guitarist Murray
Cook. They are becoming like part of the family now, and
it’s always fun to see people racing up after the gig, taking
photos with Murray and sending them off to their stunned
kids! Bang Shang A Lang rocks! They’ll add their spice to
the Castle Lounge on Sept 12th and Oct 31st.
Oct 3rd will also see our locally grown Robertson Bros
pumping it out for the fans; with a top 20 hit now under
their belts it will be hard not to be impressed by this
cheeky trio.
Plenty of nostalgia, plenty of great times, and lots of new
friends making the Castle Lounge their home on Friday
nights, just leave the slippers at home!

Saturday Afternoon Jazz
In the Castle Lounge from 2pm
Saturday night in the Castle Lounge has gone from being
a whisper to a scream! A commitment to presenting
quality live entertainment every week has seen the
crowds soar in the last three months...and there’s not a
reason in the world why we should stop now!
In the months ahead the Penrith RSL will deliver perhaps
our strongest line up of good time party hard acts that
we’ve ever assembled. Akinga, Jellybean Jam, Funky
Bunch, The Wonderbrass and those goofy guys from
Back to the Eighties are amongst a week to week blitz
that will have the dance floor packed.
We all know our resident sound tech Tom has been
looking sleep deprived in recent months, and things
don’t improve for him in the weeks ahead as he bumps
in some really spine tingling shows. Stitching the mix
together is DJ K-kat, and watch out for some visits from
the Jim Beam Party Crew!
We are putting a lot of time and effort into fine tuning the
mix of bands on Saturday night in an effort to keep the
quality high, and the feel fresh and lively. As always in the
entertainment business, people vote with their feet and
we are hoping to keep that support going with the
upcoming line up.
We have a strong commitment to live music, just as you
have a passion for enjoying it!

Saturday Party Nights
In the Castle Lounge from 9pm
There’s no doubt our jazz enthusiasts here at the Penrith
RSL are a passionate and educated audience. We have
been presenting live jazz here every Saturday afternoon in
the Castle Lounge for several years, and there’s a ‘family’
of jazz fanatics who wouldn’t miss a week. They don’t
mind giving you their opinions either!
Some months back, while chatting with a range of jazz
patrons, a name kept coming up: Bird Yard. The common
thread was ‘they were here years ago, they were great,
and we’ve never had them back. What happened?’ Thank
goodness for good memories! Bird Yard returned a couple
of months ago, and I must say I was knocked out. A true
jazz big band, loaded with rhythm, brass, and a couple of
technically superb lead vocalists, they sent tingles down
everyone’s spine. Their song list was superb, and
whatever occurred to see them drop out of the mix way
back when will be a piece of history we won’t be
revisiting. We’ll try and make up for lost time by inviting
them to appear on September 27TH & October 25th
Included in the line up will be our familiar friends and
favourites of the jazz scene Bob Gillespie, Laurie Bennett
and Alan Solomon. We can’t wait to unleash another dose
of the legendary Galapagos Duck, the smooth as silk jazz
grooves of the Acca daiquiris, the luscious Neilson Gough
Trio and the astonishing vocals of Di Bird.
We do like to throw some experimentation into the mix,
and we are very excited to introduce to you a young
recording artist called Elizabeth Geyer; a singer,
songwriter and horn player who comes highly
recommended by none other than Don Burrows!
Saturday afternoons are made for this kind of music. The
Castle Lounge is becoming a very attractive jazz scene,
there’s no good reason for any jazz lover to be vegging
out at home. Pack the lawn mower and the old movies
away, and get hip!

Back To The Eighties |
Sunday Crankin' Country
In the Castle Lounge from 2pm
Country is a form of music that is such a broad church.
From the traditional hillbilly sounds of the likes of Tex
Morton, through offshoots like rockabilly, the sounds of 50s
and 60s greats like Australia’s master yodeler Frank Eifield,
the Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly, through to the
modern country-rock sounds of today. The sounds of
country continue to evolve and it’s what makes it such a
vital and energetic music form.
While never wanting to lose touch with the great exponents
of ‘classical’ country forms, we became determined to give
some of the exciting young country talent a forum to
demonstrate their skills, and it has turned our Sunday
afternoons into a very vibrant scene indeed.
From our reservoir of familiar acts on Sunday afternoon, the
months ahead will give us the chance to revisit established
stars like Allan Caswell, Tall Timbre, Buckshot, Rough
Stock, Nicki Gillis and her band, and Paul Gibbs and Big
Sky, as well as the rock and roll and rockabilly inspirations
of the likes of Craig and the Shak Shakers and the Rock ‘n’
Rebels.
Jason Lee won many fans on his first visit with us a couple
of months back and he’s back on Oct 26th. Local girl and
rising star Jayne Denham and her band certainly know how
to crank that country sound and she’s back on August 10th
We are eagerly anticipating a debut appearance by the
diminutive ‘Pocket Rocket’ Kel-Anne Brandt. At 4’ 11”, the
unprepared will be stunned by her power, energy and
stage presence on September 6th, followed a week later
by Amber Lawrence, who is enjoying great success with
her song Good Girls, the third single from her debut album
which took her to number 1 on the Country Music Top 30
Charts. She joins us on September 14th.
It’s also exciting to see the word is being spread by country
music stations and publications who are increasingly
coming in to report on what is happening in the Castle
Lounge on Sundays. We warmly invite you to do the same.
